135th Birthday of the Formation of the NWMP

FORMATION OF THE NORTH WEST MOUNTED POLICE
On May 23 1873, Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald passed legislation officially forming the North West Mounted Police – The NWMP grew and evolved into Canada’s world renowned RCMP.

You are invited to join Fort Calgary on Victoria Day, Monday May 19, in a ceremonial cake cutting at 2 PM to commemorate this very important day in Canada’s history. Visitors will learn about the NWMP March West and the history of the NWMP in Calgary. The first 135 visitors will receive a piece of cake! From 11 AM to 4 PM activities will include wagon tours, crafts, treasure hunt, face painting and sneak-a-peak presentation of our NWMP boot camp.

OLD FORTS TRAIL
The West and East branches of the Old Forts Trail began at Fort Benton in Montana Territory.  The Eastern half along the Benton - Walsh Trail led to Fort Assinniboine in Montana and Forts Walsh and Battleford in Saskatchewan.  The Western branch along the Whoop-Up Trail connected Fort Benton with Forts Whoop-Up, MacLeod, and Calgary in Alberta. On Victoria Day, May 19 2008, we will reenact Fort Calgary’s induction.
