Community Groups

Boy Scouts & Girl Guides

Fort Calgary offers programs for Girl Guides, Boy Scouts or other organized children's group for 10 to 20 children of all ages. Meet badge requirements, learn about Fort Calgary in a fun and interactive environment.

Boy Scouts: F-Troop

This program is suitable for Beavers and Cubs but could also be adapted for Scouts. The aim of the program is to help the children to understand what life would be like for a North West Mounted Police constable in the year 1875 when Fort Calgary was first constructed. It will involve a role-playing component where they will learn the requirements to become a constable, learn to stand at attention, at ease, do simple drills, and salute as they would have in 1875. Other artifacts will be used to show what daily life was like in the 1870's for these young men. The living conditions will be illustrated by using models, pictures and the exhibit showing the North West Mounted Police NCO Barracks. Beavers will search for a cattle rustler. Scouts will learn about communication and the Morse Code. While looking at the model of the fort they will learn how it was built and what activities took place in the different buildings.
Program time: 1 ¼ hours

Girl Guides: Mighty Women

This program is designed for Brownies or Guides. It introduces the girls to the lives of two women who lived in the Calgary area in the mid to late 1800's. By handling artifacts and replicas, the children learn about the life styles of Attacked Toward Home (Chief Crowfoot's mother) and Jane Livingston. There will also be an opportunity to try on clothing that would have been worn by pioneer women. The program is interactive and gives the participants the opportunity to role play. Adaptations can be made for Sparks (Reader's Theatre) or Pathfinders (Legends and Creative Drama).
Program time: 1¼ hours

Program cost

$5.75 per child. Minimum booking 10 children or $57.50. Maximum group size is 20 participants.

Availability: Programs are offered during weekdays and weekends, between 9 AM and 5 PM.
